Sunrise Wellness Spa offers sport massage .
Sunrise Wellness Spa attended the 2010 Western Canadian Midget B Boys & Girls Softball Championships hosted in Unity on Fri. July 30 to Mon. Aug.2.
Wayne Vany brought in his skidoo trailer and we were set up with two massage tables to offer sport massage to the players from Vancouver to Manitoba. The weather was beautiful and hot that created thunder storms and heavy rain so for both conditions ,the trailer was a great addition to provide this service .
Massage therapists assisting in this service was William Schiffner, Jen Vany and Ronda(Eby) Kohlman along with Geraldine. We were kept very busy ,especially in the later morning to mid afternoon.Many shoulder strains and arm overuse injurries were addressed.
Many had never had massage before and never at an event.
It is always exciting to educate the athlete on the benfits and value of sport massage.
The Fleetwood Marlins from Vancouver BC were particularly grateful for our services; not only did they win the Gold in Men's division ,their players experienced sport massage for the first time ..Some of the players were going on to Nationals in Sarnia ,Ont. and two were selected to go play in Minnesota this very week.
This was Geraldine's 4th Western's where she offered Sport Massage Therapy.
The exciting part of this is getting experience that would not likely ever enter your clinic unless they had experienced massage previously. There is a great amount of overuse and repetitive strains due to the fact they play muliple sports and very little if any healing and recovery time.As many as three games were played back to back.
We referred a number of players to therapist in their hometown. Interestingly concussions are becoming more common in many sports and we had three players who had recieved as many as three concussions.
Sport MAssage has been a great interest to Geraldine since 1986. She studied under the best teachers in North America inorder to gain her certification in sport massage so she could work at the Calgary Olympics in 1988. Dr. Mike Hunerford was one of those dear people who also was the person who arranged with the Olympic committee to have Sport Massage at the University in Calgary as well as in Canmore for the Calgary Olympics .It was truly a very memorable time. Geraldine has volunteered hundreds of hours to sport massage events . She gained much knowledge and expertise.
 She was a founding member of the Canadian Sport Massage Association serving on the Board and being the first Chair to implement and do the testing for sport massage certification.
She has also taught sport massage for many years. Sherry Gross and Geraldine taught for a number of years together under the name Highway 21 Peak Performance Sport Massage . This seemed like an appropriate name since they both lived on HWY 21 .Sherry pursued working at International events and Geraldine continued teaching sport massage.
 William Schiffner gained his sport massage training from Geraldine .
They had the opportunity to provide sport massage to the Austrian and Latvia teams when they came to Unity for one of the play off series for the World Junior Hockey Games in Dec. 09. It was very exciting to hear the Coach ,Dino from the Austrain team knew Curtis Brown ,NHL player who is now in Austria.That coach is also a coach for Curtis ,who is a home grown boy from Senlac. Geraldine had the privilege of working on Curtis as a young hockey player on his way to the NHL scene. Pictures to come.
 They also work with the foot ball players from the high school football team as well as most sport events that occur in and around Unity.
